Freshman Admissions Requirements

SIU student

To be admitted, freshmen applicants must:

  • Have graduated from high school before beginning classes at SIU. Exceptions are made for students participating in our High School Concurrent Enrollment program and for those who have earned the G.E.D.
  • Meet high school course pattern requirements.
  • At SIU Carbondale, applicants for admission will be eligible for automatic admission if they are on track to complete our course pattern requirements and who meet one of the following criteria:
    1. A cumulative high school GPA of 2.75
    2. A ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class
    3. A test score equivalent to a 23 ACT or 1140 SAT.

Please note that for the Fall 2021, scholarships will still require a test score to determine eligibility so you are encouraged to submit a score if you wish to qualify for an academic scholarship.

Undergraduate students who do not meet one of the three criteria above will be reviewed for admission under a holistic review process that may consider GPA, test score, class rank percentile among other factors. Certain academic programs may continue to require additional admission requirements.

Additional Requirements

An additional step or screening process is required for certain programs. Requirements for direct entry into some programs exceed university admission requirements. Please be sure to read the Special Conditions section.
