What is a Saluki?

A Saluki is the oldest pure breed of dog known to humans. The records of existence date back as far as 3600 BC. The Saluki is directly related to the greyhound, both of which are well known for their speed and endurance. Because of Salukis’ exceptional abilities, ancient Egyptians used the Saluki as their top hunting dog. The Southern Illinois region is often referred to as "Little Egypt." Because of this nickname the Saluki was chosen as the mascot to represent Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
